Your Role as a Physical Therapist
- Provide Classroom Support – Deliver individual and group physical therapy services to students, addressing their unique gross motor and developmental needs. Work as part of an interdisciplinary team to create a structured and supportive learning environment.
- Monitor & Track Student Progress – Conduct initial evaluations, track student progress through daily session notes, and write biannual progress reports. Adjust therapeutic programs as needed to help students meet their developmental and mobility goals.
- Support Self-Help Skills – Assist students in developing independence by implementing individualized therapeutic programs that enhance gross motor skills. Provide referrals for appropriate assistive/adaptive technologies, such as wheelchairs and orthotics, to promote mobility and self-sufficiency.
- Ensure a Safe Learning Environment – Train staff on therapeutic activities and techniques, including handling techniques, sitting ergonomics, and appropriate cuing, to ensure students receive proper physical support. Perform discharges when appropriate to ensure students transition safely.
- Collaborate with Teachers & Families – Maintain consistent communication with parents and caregivers to provide updates on student progress and discuss strategies for continued support. Work closely with educators and support staff to implement therapeutic interventions within the classroom setting.
Required Qualifications:
- Masters or Doctoral degree in Physical Therapy.
- Licensed to practice physical therapy in NYS.
- Comfortable providing therapeutic services both individually and in group settings.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with other disciplines, including Occupational Therapy (OT), Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), and social work.
- Flexibility to conduct sessions in various environments, contexts, and social settings, tailored to each student’s individualized physical therapy program.
